It might be a required part of a World Literature class. Or maybe you just chose one to really dig into memoirs. It includes a slideshow and two forms of note-taking.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>The tricky part of talking about WWII is keeping it brief. <\/strong>You probably only have a few days available for background building in your unit, and World War II could be a whole semester in a Social Studies class.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend not getting too bogged down in the details of every major war. By all means, mention important events like D-Day&ndash;the ones that students have probably heard referenced before and will hear references to again in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instead, focus on the key pieces of information: when the war took place, the major countries involved, The Final Solution, Pearl Harbor, and Nagasaki and Hiroshima.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Admittedly, my approach to WWII is America-heavy. I&rsquo;m American, and my students are too. So I spend more time covering the United States&rsquo; role in WWII than I might if I was teaching in another country.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you need a World War II overview and don&rsquo;t want to spend time putting a presentation together (it takes a while&ndash;trust me), then check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/WWII-and-Holocaust-Slideshow-Lesson-with-Scaffolded-Guided-Notes-Editable-11307031?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">World War II and Holocaust Introduction Lesson<\/a>.<\/strong> It includes a slideshow presentation and two different notetaking activities (choose the one that&rsquo;s best for your students).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider, if you have time, sprinkling in some other background-building activities. You can have students create a WWII timeline (this activity is included in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Holocaust-Introduction-Stations-Photo-Analysis-WWII-Timeline-More-11353795?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">Holocaust Stations activity<\/a>), watch a film, or create a WebQuest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History.com has lots of visually stunning and interactive web pages dedicated to WWII. Have students listen or read one (this is one of the activities in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Holocaust-Introduction-Stations-Photo-Analysis-WWII-Timeline-More-11353795?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">Holocaust Stations resource<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also have students &ldquo;walk around&rdquo; (look at images of) a virtual museum exhibit and react to some of the artifacts displayed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These exhibits often have everyday items from the Holocaust and concentration camps and can give students some insight into what life &ldquo;back then&rdquo; looked like.<\/strong> (Students do a similar activity with a photo analysis in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Holocaust-Introduction-Stations-Photo-Analysis-WWII-Timeline-More-11353795?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">Holocaust Stations resource<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"ml-embedded\" data-form=\"T2q3Rp\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduce a Holocaust Novel Study Step 3: Emphasize the Importance of Remembering History<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Holocaust-One-pager-Mini-Research-Project-Printable-Digital-Editable-11384624?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"nopin\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/introduce-a-holocaust-novel-study\/?tp_image_id=4814\" src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/themes\/honey-glow\/images\/placeholder.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4814 lazyload\" style=\"width:300px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Slide1-3.png\" data-srcset=\"\" srcset=\"\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Holocaust-One-pager-Mini-Research-Project-Printable-Digital-Editable-11384624?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">Holocaust One-pager Research Project<\/a>, students choose one Holocaust-related topic to research.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Before jumping into your Holocaust novel study, it&rsquo;s also a good idea to give your unit and the reason behind it some bigger context. <strong>Why are they reading about an event in the past?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To remember it, of course, and, hopefully, to prevent it from happening again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No doubt your students will have heard this before. &ldquo;Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/World-Genocide-Project-for-World-Literature-or-Holocaust-Unit-Editable-11089899?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"nopin\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/introduce-a-holocaust-novel-study\/?tp_image_id=4758\" src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/themes\/honey-glow\/images\/placeholder.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4758 lazyload\" style=\"width:300px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Slide1.jpg\" data-srcset=\"\" srcset=\"\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/World-Genocide-Project-for-World-Literature-or-Holocaust-Unit-Editable-11089899?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">World Genocide Project<\/a> will show students that, sadly, the Holocaust is not the only genocide in history&ndash;and probably won&rsquo;t be the last.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>But what your students might not realize is that the Holocaust isn&rsquo;t the only genocide in our world&rsquo;s past. <\/strong>They certainly may not realize that genocides are still happening today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about the Holocaust not as a singular tragic period in history, but as one example of a large-scale genocide, might help bring some relevance to your unit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&rsquo;d really like to help students make a connection between the Holocaust and the rest of the globe and global history (and practice research skills), I recommend assigning a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/World-Genocide-Project-for-World-Literature-or-Holocaust-Unit-Editable-11089899?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">World Genocide Project<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/introduce-a-holocaust-novel-study\/?tp_image_id=4818\" data-pin-title=\"How to Introduce a Holocaust Novel Study\" data-pin-description=\"Beginning a Holocaust novel study? So, before you decide on any one lesson or activity, really focus on your teaching goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are there certain skills you want students to practice in this unit? Do you want to emphasize the human toll? Are you trying to get students to think about how their own acts of kindness can impact the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use your goals to shape how you introduce the Holocaust.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, for your introduction, you want to provide some context around WWII and get students thinking about the experience of Holocaust survivors, I recommend grabbing my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Holocaust-Introduction-Bundle-WWII-Lesson-ActivitiesWorksheets-Project-11398364?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Introduce%20a%20Holocaust%20Novel%20Study\">Holocaust Introduction Bundle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside you&rsquo;ll get three resources.
