Students <em>want<\/em> to read these books, and they are easier to comprehend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All four of the novels featured in this post fit the bill! Students will be interested in her story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To learn more about this awesome novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/why-you-should-teach-persepolis\/\">you can check out my full blog post about <em>Persepolis<\/em> here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World Literature Novels for Struggling Readers #2: Born a Crime<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Born-a-Crime-by-Trevor-Noah-Unit-Bundle-Unabridged-Young-Readers-10683676?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=World%20Literature%20Novels%20for%20Struggling%20Readers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"nopin\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/world-literature-novels-for-struggling-readers\/?tp_image_id=4691\" src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/themes\/honey-glow\/images\/placeholder.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4691 lazyload\" style=\"width:300px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide1.png\" data-srcset=\"\" srcset=\"\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Make teaching <em>Born a Crime<\/em> easy&ndash;regardless of which version you choose to use&ndash;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Born-a-Crime-by-Trevor-Noah-Unit-Bundle-Unabridged-Young-Readers-10683676?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=World%20Literature%20Novels%20for%20Struggling%20Readers\">with my ready-to-go <em>Born a Crime<\/em> Unit!<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4dpiPpB\">Born a Crime<\/a><\/em> is Trevor Noah&rsquo;s (comedian and previous host of <em>The Daily Show<\/em>) memoir about growing up in South Africa during apartheid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While this novel is certainly more challenging than a graphic novel, you can scaffold the read by grabbing the young readers&rsquo; edition instead of the unabridged version.<\/strong> This will give you a version of the text that is a bit shorter and free of swearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Packed with funny anecdotes and observations about the world, Noah&rsquo;s account of his childhood will engage your students and have them begging to keep reading.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, there&rsquo;s no shortage of deep themes to explore with your students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/teach-born-a-crime\/\">Find out more about why <em>Born a Crime<\/em> is a fantastic novel to teach in this blog post here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World Literature Novels for Struggling Readers #3: Maus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly, I&rsquo;m stretching my criteria a bit with this one. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4dmUII8\">Maus<\/a><\/em> by Art Spiegelman is a graphic novel recounting Spiegelman&rsquo;s father&rsquo;s story of survival during the holocaust. <strong>Technically, Spiegelman was born in America, but he is Polish by descent and most of <em>Maus<\/em> follows his Polish father.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/The-Complete-Maus-by-Art-Spiegelman-Whole-Unit-Bundle-for-High-School-11627612?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=World%20Literature%20Novels%20for%20Struggling%20Readers\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"nopin\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/world-literature-novels-for-struggling-readers\/?tp_image_id=4852\" src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/themes\/honey-glow\/images\/placeholder.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4852 lazyload\" style=\"width:300px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide1-1.png\" data-srcset=\"\" srcset=\"\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daunted by the idea of putting together your own <em>The Complete Maus<\/em> unit? <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/The-Complete-Maus-by-Art-Spiegelman-Whole-Unit-Bundle-for-High-School-11627612?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=World%20Literature%20Novels%20for%20Struggling%20Readers\">Then don&rsquo;t! Grab my done-for-you <em>The Complete Maus<\/em> unit and focus on discussing ideas with your students instead!<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Still, depending on how strict your district&rsquo;s definition of World Literature is, this one might not quite qualify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, however, you can get this one on your syllabus, you won&rsquo;t be disappointed!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer <em>The Complete Maus<\/em> to teaching just the first graphic novel. Because they are comics, reading both books will still go quickly in your class.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Maus<\/em> has all the advantages of teaching a graphic novel: easier Lexile, faster pacing, short read, etc. But it also has a highly engaging story. <\/strong>Your students will be at the edge of their seats as they follow Vladek&rsquo;s survival during World War II.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/teach-maus\/\">Find out more about how <em>The Complete Maus<\/em> is perfect for your classroom right here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"ml-embedded\" data-form=\"T2q3Rp\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World Literature Novels for Struggling Readers #4: The Alchemist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bestseller <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Wo1wy3\">The Alchemist<\/a><\/em> by Paulo Coelho is an easy read about a boy pursuing his dream. <strong>It&rsquo;s full of life lessons and easy-to-digest parable-like stories that are perfect for students who struggle to interpret metaphors and symbolism.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, <em>The Alchemist<\/em> is the perfect training ground for practicing analysis, since so much of Coelho&rsquo;s writing goes just slightly deeper than surface-level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written at an easy reading level, you can read this novel with your class, explore its ideas, and still have time for an engaging project!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/world-literature-novels-for-struggling-readers\/?tp_image_id=4912\" data-pin-title=\"These World Literature Novels are Perfect for Struggling Readers\" data-pin-description=\"Students not reading at grade level?
